How many people will remain strong amid persecutions he/she has? If you are struggling in some areas of your life, please learn a good lesson from the prophet Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 20:10-13, it is evident that his opponents – even his friends – put hostility against him. That hostility leads to the rejection of the prophet. However, amid his persecutions, Jeremiah has a strong faith in God. He said, “But the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.” (Jer. 20:11). In other words, he indeed could see the hostility towards him, yet his trust in God was never fade. Jeremiah is a model of faith for us all.
The rejection of the prophet Jeremiah portrays the rejection of Jesus Christ, our Lord. In John 10:31-42, Jesus knows precisely that the Jews against him not because of blasphemy, but because of their envy. Jesus’ teaching is authoritative and touching, yet at the same time, he has the mighty power to cure the sick and bring alive the dead. Of course, if Jesus wishes, he could bring all people to become his followers. But that is not his primary mission. His mission is to bring salvation into the world and show the truth that he is the Son of God. During the heavy persecution against him, Jesus Christ, our Lord, remain firm in carrying out His mission.
Remain steadfast in faith is the lesson we can learn from these two passages. Being Christians does not mean that we are immune to suffering in the world. Paradoxically, it is precisely in this suffering that we can become real Christians. Jesus never says that he will erase our pain, but he says, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29). Jesus Christ, our Lord, took the sufferings of the cross as a means for the salvation of humanity.
Prophet Jeremiah showed that he was persistent in faith even though he was in great distress. Similarly, Jesus Christ makes it clear that the hostility from the Jews cannot stop his mission to bring salvation to the world.
Therefore, when we are dealing with torments and obstacles of life, remember to stay remain firm in the faith, in all conditions of life! Saint Paul said in his first letter to the Corinthians, “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Cor 10:13). This beautiful words should reassure us, who meet much smaller obstacles, to be more grateful in life for the blessings we have been receiving. God bless you and stay safe!
